Desire

Everything you need to know
1 min readJul 13, 2021

Golden leaves upon a summer star,

Rolling winds on the hardwood deck,

A gentle kiss upon a lover’s neck,

The solemn sounds of a creeper bar.

A longing look on the playground sent,

A thousand needles into the beating drum,

Thump, thump, thump. Come

Says the Devil’s kindly net.

A death rattle from a broken shell,

Lies and secrets of our neighbours tell.

Thoughts and feelings go where may,

Horreur, amour, passion, haïr,

Never tires, never fails, never dies,

Desire.

This popped into my head just now. A tad melodramatic for my taste, but I’ve been reading Baudelaire’s Fleurs du Mal (Flowers of Evil), and his style appears to have rubbed off on me. I swing from positive words (i.e. golden, flower, lover, kindly) to negative ones (i.e. death, Devil, lies, broken) quite freely, which is reminiscent of Baudelaire’s jumping from what he called “Spleen” (absolute suffering and ugliness) to “Ideal” ( absolute pleasure and beauty).

Or maybe I’m just nuts.

You decide.
